On Wednesday, the families of the human rights lawyer, Mr. Mike Ozekhome (SAN), and the All Progressives Congress chief in Edo North, Athanasius Ogbome, have been advised not to accede to the demands by kidnappers that they should pay N150m and N100m, respectively, as ransom for their release.
The Chairman of Edo State-based non-governmental organisation, Reparation for Africa, George Enereba, gave this advice while reacting to the reported demands by the suspected abductors.
Enereba called on Nigerians to resist caving in to such demands, saying such would encourage those behind the act to continue in their heinous ways.
The hoodlums, who seized Ozekhome, his driver and Ogbome between Benin and Iruekpen on Friday, had reportedly made contacts with relations of the victims, demanding the ransom payment before they would be released.
The victims, who all hail from Edo North, were abducted between Ehor and Iruekpen, along the Benin-Auchi road, last week Friday.
Stating his position on the ransom demand, Enereba, who is also a lawyer, said, "I think it (kidnap) is a very sad development in the history of this country, more especially that he (Ozekhome) is a legal practitioner and he has been fighting for the rights and freedom of the downtrodden. It is a sad and it has to do with our economy that is not well planned. I see it that way."
