STOP THE STRIKE NOW - GOV. SUSWAN URGES ASUU

Dr. Gabriel Suswam, the Benue State Governor and the Chairman of the Federal Government's Needs Assessment Committee, on September 5, 2013, Thursday, has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend the strike action in the interest of the students.

Gov. Suswam made this statement in the capital of Benue State, Makurdi, when the leadership of the National Union of Benue State Students (NUBESS) paid him a courtesy visit.

The governor noted that the Federal Government made the first step on enhancing the welfare of the striking Union, and now it is time for them to reciprocate this gesture.

"The Federal Government has shifted ground and so it is expected that ASUU too should show commitment by calling off the strike in the general interest of the students. I think the leadership of ASUU is misleading lecturers and students. ASUU should not play politics with the future of the students. They can call off the strike as the needs committee continue to negotiate the matter," governor Suswam said.

It would be added that after holding its congress at the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, ASUU of the Benin zone has vowed that the strike continues, despite the payment of N100 billion + N30 billion. The deadlock can be resolved only in case the Federal Government revert to the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement.
